In 1999, Bank of Mississippi officially changes its name to BancorpSouth, signaling an intention to expand to surrounding states. BancorpSouth enters the property and casualty business with the acquisition of Stewart, Sneed, Hewes Insurance, a Southern Mississippi agency that was, at the time, the largest independent insurance agency in Mississippi.

In 2003, BancorpSouth acquires Wright & Percy Insurance, the oldest and largest independent agency in Louisiana, with locations in Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lake Charles and Alexandria. Shortly after, that same year, BancorpSouth merges with Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing, one of the largest independent insurance agencies in Arkansas.

BancorpSouth continues to expand with locations in new markets such as Broussard, LA; Rogers, AR; New Albany, MS; Spanish Fort, AL; and Hot Springs, AR.

BancorpSouth operates one wholly owned subsidiary: BancorpSouth Bank. The BancorpSouth Bank Headquarters is at Tupelo, and has $13.2 billion in assets.
