Terms and Definitions

• Domestic deposits

  The sum of all domestic deposits, including demand deposits, money market deposits and time deposits.
• Equity capital

  Total equity capital (includes preferred and common stock, surplus and undivided profits).
• ROA

  Return on assets, net income after taxes and extraordinary items (annualized) as a percent of average total assets.
• ROE

  Return on equity, annualized net income as a percent of average equity on a consolidated basis.

In 1978, the total assets reached $50 million and then doubled to $100 million over the next 12 years. In 1989, Farmers State Bank opened a branch in Howe and two years later, one in Shipshewana. In 1995, the assets doubled again to $200 million. It reached $300 million in 2002 after Joseph G. Pierce was named president two years earlier. A Sturgis, Michigan branch was opened in 2003.

Farmers State Bank acquired the banking business of The First National Bank of Fremont, which included 6 banking offices in 2005. This caused the total assets to exceed $400 million. The most recent branch opening was in Millersburg, in 2008, bringing the total to 14 offices in 5 counties across Northeast Indiana and Southwest Michigan.
