The First State Bank of Fertile was the first bank established in that locality. It was organized in 1887, the first year of Fertile's existence, as a private bank owned by W.H. Matthews, E.L. Matthews and Frank E.S. Miller & Company, and Norman Hanson.

The bank was housed for 20 years in a two story brick building which replaced the original frame structure in 1894, but in 1914 was moved into a one story brick building erected in that year. The bank operated at that location for fifty-six years until 1980 when it moved to its present location. The bank offers Checking, Savings, CD's, Loans, Business and Agricultural Checking, Loans.
