First State Bank was founded in October, 1933, in Battle Creek, Iowa. The country was still reeling from the effects of the 1929 stock crash and the shattering depression, which followed. In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt stated in his Inaugural address, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” With this in the back of their minds, a group of people who had a great deal of courage and business foresight, decided to gamble on the future of Battle Creek and established a new banking firm, First State Bank.

In 1978, a new bank office was constructed in Ida Grove and the charter was moved here from Battle Creek. The Ida Grove office was established as the main office, while the Battle Creek office became a branch office.

On December 3, 2001, First State Bank was given approval to open a branch office in Danbury. A temporary bank office was opened February 1, 2002. The FSB staff moved into the new, permanent bank building January 13, 2003. As business continued to grow in Danbury and from the surrounding areas, the Board of Directors decided to open a bank office in Mapleton. On April 3, 2006, FSB Bank PLUS+, an office of First State Bank of Ida Grove was opened for business.

At close of business on Thursday, February 7, 2008, First State Bank purchased Odebolt State Bank. On Friday, February 8, 2008, the doors were open under First State Bank’s new ownership. The Board of Directors began renovation plans for the bank building, both exterior and interior, to preserve the historical essence of the building. While renovation was in full swing, a movie production crew took over the different areas of the building to film the movie “Peacock”. It was released on DVD in spring 2010. As of today, the building has been restored and First State Bank’s presence in Odebolt has been received very well.

First State Bank continues to serve the financial needs of the business, agricultural, professional and consumer populations of banks trade area.
